On 29 and 30 November, UNIDROIT and the Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (ZUEL) co-hosted a two day Conference “Unification of Factoring Law: Global and Chinese Reflections on the UNIDROIT Model Law on Factoring” at the ZUEL Campus in Wuhan, the People’s Republic of China. The Conference celebrated the launch of the Chinese translation of the UNIDROIT Model Law on Factoring (MLF), which had been prepared by a group of Chinese legal experts who participated in the negotiation of the MLF and led by Professor Meiling Huang.

The Conference had over 180 attendees and 70 speakers on six panels, including public officials, legal experts, members of the judiciary, commercial lawyers, representatives of financial associations and academia. The conference included keynote presentations from Judge of the Supreme People’s Court of China Ding Junfeng, the UNIDROIT Secretary General Ignacio Tirado, UNIDROIT Governing Council Members Henry Gabriel (Chair of the MLF Working Group) and Jingxia Shi, UNIDROIT Senior Legal Officer William Brydie-Watson, and Working Group expert observer Meiling Huang. The Conference also included presentations from MLF Working Group Expert members Louise Gullifer, Megumi Hara and Giuliano Castellano, UNIDROIT Legal Officer Ian Li (seconded from the Department of Justice of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China) and many notable Chinese factoring experts.

The UNIDROIT Model Law on Factoring was approved by the UNIDROIT Governing Council at its 102nd session in May 2023. The official English and French versions were published and launched in October 2023. The Chinese text is the first translation of the MLF prepared in a language other than UNIDROIT’s two official languages.
