1 november 2019. The president of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Prof. Eugenio Gaudio, has been awarded the honorary doctoral degree of the Zhongnan University of Economics and Law. The award is of particular relevance for the Chinese education system and, in the past, has been given, for instance, to Kofi Annan, former General Secretary of the United Nations and to Gerhard Schröeder, former Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. The ceremony was attended by a delegation from the Sapienza University, by the Deputy Director of the Hubei province education department, Huang Guobin, by the Party Secretary of the ZUEL, Luan Yongyu, by the President of the ZUEL, Prof. Yang Canming, by the Deputy President of the ZUEL Prof. Yao Li and by the faculties’ and respective international exchange departments’ leaders. The ceremony was hosted by Prof. Yao Li.
In his speech on behalf of the ZUEL, the secretary Luan Yongyu recalled how Prof. Gaudio is not only a medical science researcher internationally renowed, who had great impact over the work of many other researchers, but also an estemeed and renowed expert of the higher education systems. Prof. Gaudio is a friend of China and actively promoted the sino-italian cooperation, increasing the number of exchanges. He also provided a crucial contribution to the cultural exchanges between the two countries. Thanks to his guidance and enthusiasm, the Sapienza University established a deep cooperation with the ZUEL. The sino-italian center for legal studies represents a high-level international cooperation platform, allowing the two universities to make great progress in the joint educational projects between Italy and China, in the training programmes for working in international organizations, in the scientific cooperation and research, in the organization of joint international conferences. Afterwards, secretary Luan Yongyu read the documents expressing the approval of the State Council of the PRC to the conferral to Prof. Gaudio of the honoris causa doctoral degree.
The diploma was handed by Prof. Yang Canming, president of the ZUEL, on behalf of the degree committee of the ZUEL.
After the ceremony, Prof. Gaudio delivered a speech titled “The international vocation of the Sapienza and the relation with the Zhongnan University of Economics and Law of Wuhan”. Prof. Gaudio introduced the teachers and the students to the role of the Sapienza in the establishment of an “European experience” aimed at realizing a high-level university alliance, at actively promoting the exchanges of the teaching and researching personnel and, in particular, the foreign activities of the students, at carrying on the work for the implementation of the EU “Project Lamos” and the “Bologna Process”. Prof. Gaudio, furthermore, recalled the history and the development of the international exchanges between the Sapienza and the Chinese universities, especially the achievements of the cooperation with the ZUEL, such as the progress in the cooperation for the study of the legal science in the two countries and the cooperation between the two universities’ personnel, for the purpose of pushing toward the mutual understanding and friendship.
