Supplementary Admission for the Master Degree in “European Studies: Comparative and
European Law” program in 2020-2021

   With the approval of the Ministry of Education, the European Studies: Comparative and European Law Master's Degree Education Program jointly organized by Zhongnan University of Economics and Law and Sapienza University of Rome, Italy will temporarily expand 6 independent enrollment places in the 2020-2021 academic year.

I. Project introduction

   The “European Studies: Comparative and European Law” master's degree program, approved by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China in April 2019, is a jointly organized program by Zhongnan University of Economics and Law of Wuhan, China and Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. The project aims to foster world-class legal talents, and cultivate modern, world-oriented, future-oriented, moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic development, innovative spirit and global vision. The ability to engage in foreign-related legal practice and research on the international frontier of legal theory issues is of the utmost importance.

   Sapienza University, also known as the First University of Rome, was founded in 1303 and is one of the oldest universities in the world, the leader in the international university rankings. Sapienza University consists of 11 departments, 63 departments and several high-level research centers in law, archaeology, physics and astrophysics, anthropology and cultural heritage, nanotechnology, cell and gene therapy. The Law School of Sapienza University of Rome ranks first among Italian universities, and among the world QS disciplines it ranks within the Top 60 universities. It has a strong faculty and many legal scholars with world-renowned reputation. It has trained many of the world’s foremost talents, including the current president and prime minister of Italy. Numerous other famous politicians, lawyers, judges, have all studied at the renowned university which has more than earned its reputation as the cradle of jurists.

   Zhongnan University of Economics and Law is a higher education institution directly under the Ministry of Education. The university is considered a top university within China in the concentrations of economics, law and management. It is a key university for the national “211 Project” universities and the “985 Engineering Advantages Innovation Platform” project. In 2017, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law was classified as a world-class university and given a first-class rank for its legal discipline (referred to as  “double first-class”) and successfully raised the standing of Chinese universities on the world stage. The academic departments of Zhongnan all have obvious advantages such strong professors, scientific research achievements, state of the art training centers and active foreign exchanges with universities around the world. The Five Institutes and Four Departments of Zhongnan University have a profound historical heritage and are extremely important pillars of Chinese jurisprudence and economic education. 

II. The Academic System and Training

   The European Studies: Comparative and European Law Master's Degree Program is taught at the Nanhu Campus of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law. The program is 2 years in duration and taught entirely in English.

   The project introduces the high-quality teaching resources and innovative postgraduate training systems of Sapienza University directly to Chinese students, and implements the basic principles of combining theory with practice, unified requirements and teaching students in accordance with their personal aptitude. Through the use of individual guidance by a tutor combined with the collective in-group training lead by both Italian and Chinese teachers, students will receive a top-notch legal education and edification. The combination of systematic procedural instruction, highly specified scientific research, interactive classroom teaching and group discussions are designed to help each student gain a thorough understanding of international jurisprudence. On-campus learning and off-campus practice is highly flexible and students will be able to fully control their course of study and pace of learning.

III. Degree Awards and Academic Qualifications

   After completion of “European Studies: Comparative and European Law” master's degree program during which students receive corresponding credits and complete a thesis, they will finally obtain the “European Studies: Comparative and European Law” master's degree certificate issued by the Sapienza University of Rome.

IIII. Prospect Development

   The Master of European Studies: Comparative and European Law master's degree education program is dedicated to cultivating complex high-end legal talents with theoretical literacy, practical skills, and foreign language skills. The courses offered focus on civil and commercial law and international law. All courses are taught in English. At the same time, Italian courses are provided to train students to have the ability to engage in management and legal work in state agencies, international enterprises, well-known domestic and foreign law firms as well as multinational corporations.

   Zhongnan University of Economics and Law has signed agreements with well-known European and American universities and research institutions such as the Sapienza University of Rome, Trento University, University of Montreal, Canada, Intellectual Property Center of Munich, Germany, and Fordham University and will endeavor to conduct in-depth exchanges and cooperation projects. Students who intend to study abroad are now presented with the opportunity to earn a doctorate in a famous law school in Europe or the United States and obtain a high scholarship.

V. Program application Requirements

1. Application conditions

1) Obtaining a bachelor's degree or degree in law before July 2020, or a second bachelor's degree in law, or a master's degree or above in law.

2) Two Letters of recommendation from Professor or Associate Professor.

3) English IELTS score of 6.0; or TOEFL score of 79 or more.

4) Resume, personal statement, training plan, undergraduate course transcript, graduation certificate and degree certificate must be submitted when applying.

5) All application materials must be submitted in English. The Chinese graduation and degree certificate must also be translated into English and sent to the official email address of  Istituto Italo-Cinese of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law: zhongyi@zuel.edu.cn.

2. Review exam

  1) Application date: September 16, 2020 to September 29, 2020.

  2) Examination time: The specific examination time will be notified separately.

  3) Test method: English interview.

  4) Admission method: Sapienza University of Rome will independently assess candidates and Zhongnan University of Economics and Law will assist. The prospective list of admissions will be announced on the official Istituto Italo-Cinese page at Zhongnan University of Economics and Law website. 

VI. Fees and Awards

1. Fees

Tuition fee: RMB 75,000 per academic year

   Payment time: Each successful student applying for admission must pay the tuition for one academic year at the time of registration. In the fourth semester, program students can apply to go to the Sapienza University in Rome to write a graduation thesis or conduct an internship. No additional tuition fees will be charged during this period.

   Accommodation fees: During the domestic study period, the accommodation fees refer to the charging standards prepared by Zhongnan University of Economics and Law. Tuition and accommodation fees are compared with the current national and provincial charging policies. The list of annual fees and charges for this project is compiled according to the nature of the fees, and is publicized to the public through the official website of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law.

2. Scholarships 

   The Master of European Studies: Comparative and European Law master's degree education program has a scholarship system for outstanding academic students. First-class, second-class and third-class scholarships are selected every year.
